Initiate

Often, tambors are held for the purpose of presenting a new initiate to the community and to Aña. In Matanzas, this is done on the Iyawo’s third day of initiation, after the Ita or consultation with the Orishas. The Iyawo is dressed in the ritual garb of his or her guardian Orisha—in this case, Ogun. He also wears all his collares or necklaces as well as all the masos (Orishas’ necklaces) of the house. Children of Ogun present a rooster and a bottle of Aguadiente to the Aña, in addition to their plate, coconut, candle, and money offering.
